Building Exterior

Energy-conscious builders have known for years that the materials used to sheath a home play a major role in its energy efficiency.

The exterior of the Wentworth Project is still being finished, as we research the optimal materials to use for its insulation.

The exterior sheathing is made up of oriented strand board and Aspenite off-spec material purchased at a major discount. This fall, this layer will be covered with either glass-clad insulation or foam insulation applied with a nozzle. A vapour barrier has been installed to make it an air-tight home.

The exterior finish will be a mix of acrylic, concrete and stucco using paint residue as a colouring. In a shadow blue-gray shade, the final finish will blend the structure into the surrounding forest. Lower levels will be clad in recycled stone slabs for a finished look and protection from break-ins or small fires.
